Caring for Your Engagement Ring: 10 Most-Asked Questions (Answered)
Daily life dulls sparkle. A simple care routine and occasional professional checks keep your ring looking its best and secure for years. Here’s what Steven Charles Quance recommends.
1) How often should you clean an engagement ring?
At home every 2–4 weeks; professionally every 6–12 months. Regular cleaning removes oils and residue; pro checks catch loose stones or wear early.
2) Can you safely clean a ring at home?
Yes—mild soap + warm water + soft toothbrush. Soak 10–15 minutes, gently brush, rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals. Use ultrasonics only for sturdy stones (not emeralds/opals or treated gems).
3) Which cleaning methods should be avoided?
No abrasive cleaners, toothpaste, rough brushes, bleach, ammonia or acetone. Ultrasonic cleaners with soft/treated stones can crack or fade them—when in doubt, skip it.
4) How often should you have your ring professionally checked?
Every 6–12 months, or sooner after a hard knock. We’ll check prongs, settings and stone security, especially for pavé and intricate designs.
5) Can resizing damage a ring?
Done by a pro, resizing is safe—but frequent or extreme changes can weaken structure. Pavé, eternity and tension settings are trickier. Discuss limits before resizing.
6) Does insurance cover loss or damage?
Yes. Add to home insurance or get standalone jewellery cover. Keep an up-to-date appraisal and photos to ensure accurate replacement.
7) How should you store your ring safely?
Store individually in a soft pouch or lined box—never loose in a drawer or on hard surfaces. For travel, use a padded case.
8) Should you remove your ring for certain activities?
Yes—take it off for gardening, gym sessions, swimming (chlorine), cleaning chemicals and contact sports. Even diamonds can chip if hit just right.
9) Do different metals require different care?
Platinum: won’t tarnish; can develop a soft patina (polish restores shine). White gold: rhodium may need re-plating. Yellow/Rose gold: can develop patina; polish if you prefer a bright finish.
10) How long can an engagement ring last with proper care?
Decades—often generations. Consistent cleaning, sensible storage and routine check-ups preserve both beauty and structure.
